Exploring Limestone Corals
20th October 2018
This is a 6.8 mile circular walk in the Peak District - although we didn't quite finish it as I had to get back to get ready to go out with the girls! We took a short cut and cut about a mile off the end. I can't recommend this walk enough - it is just so beautiful - it must be quite a popular walk as we saw lots of people today - sometimes we hardly see anyone!
It starts in the village of Longnor - the book says to park and start your walk in the market place but we couldn't find a space so we just drove bit further up into the village and found a space on the road.
Next stop - the village of Earl Sterndale and a pub called the Quiet Woman - it's not the most beautiful village - or pub - but the landlord and the beer are great!
Legend has it that she was known as Chattering Charteris - a former publican's wife who made her husband's life a misery by her continual nagging - so he lopped off her head!
The walk continues over the side of Hitter Hill and down steep limestone slopes to the farm lane at the foot where you follow the lane past Underhill and on to Crowdicote.
Unfortunately when we got to Crowdicote the next pub - Park Horse Inn - was closed as it was late in the afternoon so we continued - sadly without being able to sample a pint at this pub. A little further on we took a short cut back to the car as I needed to get back in time to get ready to go out with the girls for a meal and theatre.
We will return to sample this pub and do the last bit of the walk!
Absolutely gorgeous walk - love love loved it!!
And Tilly loved it too!
